Media Formats

Learn how media is used in Question Sets to provide rich and engaging content

Media is used in Question Sets and can cover multiple different types:

  • Images
  • Audio Clips
  • Video Clips
  • PDF Documents

In order for the media to display correctly it must adhere to the following specifications.

Image Specifications

Image File Type

  • PNG - PNG is the recommended image type for graphic images due to the high quality compared to file size

  • JPG - JPG is the recommended format for photo images or when PNG is not suitable when reduced file size is required

⚠️it is not recommended to use images with transparency to ensure they display consistently. If the source images are transparent it is recommended to apply an image background colour of grey (hex #E1E3E5)

Image Sizes

All images should be provided in fullscreen size.

  • Fullscreen W1920 x H1080

✅ Images can be cropped to reduce the height only if the image allows for this as long as the width value of 1920 is maintained.

For reference, the following image sizes are used and are automatically converted from the fullscreen image size to cater to different device resolutions.

  • Large - W1280 x H720
  • Medium - W640 x H360
  • Small - W480 x H270

Image Aspect Ratio

  • All mages can have any aspect ratio, however, 16:9 or 4:3 are recommended as they work best for mobile viewing

✅ Images will always be adjusted to fit the max width of the device display area

Audio Specifications

Audio Types

  • Mp3 - mp3 is the accepted format type for audio based on the high-quality file size and the ability to be supported on mobile devices.

⚠️ WAV files are not useable and must be converted to mp3 for use

Minimum Audio Quality Settings

  • Sample Rate - 44kHz

  • Bits per sample - 32

  • Bitrate - 64 kb/s

  • Channels - Stereo

  • Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2 (mpg)

✅ Every audio clip generated for a question part must be provided as a separate mp3 file. Make sure audio clips that use multiple voice-over characters are merged into a single contiguous clip before use. Clips where two different takes have been recorded will also require splitting out before use.

Video Specification

Video files are to be loaded to Youtube and the following types are accepted.

Video Types

  • mp4 - mp4 video is the recommended format type due to the high-quality file size and the ability to be supported on mobile devices.

  • mov - mov video is also an acceptable format type however it is a proprietary Apple file format for QuickTime and is often higher in quality and larger in size than mp4 videos.
All video files should be provided as a single file per question part. Where voiceovers are used in videos, all audio sub-files must be merged into a single complete video file for upload.

Minimum Video Settings

  • Codec - H264 MPEG-4 AVC

  • Video Resolution - 1280 x 720 High Definition

  • Frame Rate - 24

  • Audio - MPEG AAC mp4a, stereo, 44kHz sample rate, 32 bits

Video Custom Thumbnail Image

Where a custom video thumbnail image is required it should be provided as large as possible. It will be used as the preview image in the embedded player.

We recommend custom thumbnails:

  • have a resolution of 1280x720 (with a minimum width of 640 pixels).

  • be provided in image formats such as JPG, PNG, or GIF.

  • remain under a 2 MB file size.

  • try to use a 16:9 aspect ratio as it's the most used in video players and previews.
