Understanding Competency (topic based) Question Sets

Understanding how Competency (topic based) Questions sets work is important when determining Series parameters to know how many topics learners should do simultaneously

Competency is a term used to describe question sets that have a topic / question structure, which are typically used to determine competency in a topic.

Topic based Questions Sets have a simple structure that ensures questions are mastered within each topic before moving on to the next topic.

Competency Structure

  • Question Set
    • Topic 1
      • Question 1.1
      • Question 1.2
      • Question 1.3
    • Topic 2
      • Question 2.1
      • Question 2.2
      • Question 2.3

Configuration Rules

  • Questions of similar content are grouped under the same topic
  • Topics must have a unique name within the question set
  • There must be at least 1 topic per question set
  • There must be at least 1 question per topic
  • Topics don't need to have the same number of questions in each
  • The Question per day (QPD) value used in the Series determines how many concurrent questions & topics can be active at the same time
  • Only 1 question within a topic can be active at the same time

Operational Rules

  • The system will automatically select the competency enrolment type for all enrolments (including all Learning Pathways enrolments)
  • On the 1st day of the enrolment, the learner will receive the 1st question from the 1st topic (e.g., Question 1.1)
  • Based on the QPD value in the Series, the learner may then receive subsequent questions. These will be the 1st question from the next topic (e.g., Question 2.1, 3.1, 4.1 etc) until the QPD value has been reached.
  • On the 2nd day of the enrolment, the learner will receive the 2nd question from the 1st topic (e.g., Question 1.2).
  • Based on the QPD value in the Series, the learner may then receive subsequent questions. These will be the 2nd question from the next topic (e.g., Question 2.2, 3.2, 4.2 etc) until the QPD value has been reached.

Typical Configurations

  • QPD = 1 - only 1 active topic and 1 active question
  • QPD = 2 - 2 active topics and 2 active questions (one question per topic)
  • QPD = 3 - 3 active topics and 3 actives questions (one question per topic)
